Is iCloud sync taking a long time?

Why sync can take time, and how to help it along

Learn why iCloud sync can take a while when you have many photos and videos, why it helps to keep Clips open, and what to watch out for.

Clips syncs photos and videos to iCloud one by one.

If you have many photos and videos, or the files are large, sync can take a while to finish. The first time you turn on iCloud sync, it can take even longer.

A slow sync does not always mean something is wrong. Give it enough time, and check how it is progressing.

Four ways to help sync along

Check the following so sync can move more smoothly.

  1. Connect to a stable Wi-Fi network. An unstable internet connection can delay sync.
  2. Keep Clips open. If you have many photos and videos, leaving the app on screen while sync runs can help.
  3. Check your iCloud storage. If storage is full, some files may not sync.
  4. Plug in a charger if you can. Syncing many photos and videos can use more battery.

You do not need every item above before sync can start. They help it run more smoothly.

Does sync continue if I close the app?

iPhone and iPad can limit background work to save battery.

If you close Clips or switch to another app, sync may pause or slow down for a while.

Photos and videos that have already synced to iCloud do not disappear when you close the app. Files that have not synced yet stay on this device, and Clips picks up the remaining sync when you open it again.

When you have many photos and videos, keeping Clips on screen is what lets sync run smoothly.

Where do I check sync status?

You can check the current sync status in Settings → iCloud.

To see whether sync has finished, look at the current status together with Last iCloud check.

For a fuller explanation of each status, see the guide below.

Is sync still not moving?

Depending on how many photos and videos you have, and on your network, sync can take time.

If the status does not change for a long time, or Needs attention appears, something may need a closer look.

First, check the current status and the suggested action in Settings → iCloud.

If the problem continues, contact us from Settings → Send feedback.

When you write, include what was happening and the sync status on screen. That helps us look into the cause.

We will check what you send and help sync work as it should.
